Seven Fires An aggregated version of two previously published books titled Children of the Dawn, and Promise of the Dawn.

Terrorists sabotage The Chinese radar misleading China to believe The United States has launched a preemptive nuclear attack, prompting retaliatory nuclear bombardment. Motive was determined as desperation as America’s economy has collapsed. Supported by ever increasing unpredictable record-breaking weather patterns, nuclear winter unleashes devastating precipitation. Reconnaissance reveals numerous Indian Nations have survived the ordeal. Roman Eaglewalk, revered Chief of a village known as Sipayek receives a phone call from an intrigued President Lenning who wants to address the mystery of the Indians survival. It is determined that North American Indians have spent generations preparing for the onslaught.

Meanwhile, a teacher on the Indian reservation named Jeff Meserve finds himself trapped in a local grocery store with five others. The roof threatens to collapse, leaving six strangers in a world of intensifying interaction. Suicide is followed by murder as one becomes insane under the intense pressure. After an extensive duration, Jeff is left only with a woman named Abigail Hatfield, a local librarian. The two eventually escape into a barren, snow-laden world. They struggle to find other survivors. Abigail’s son, eventually named Promise, is later discovered to have his identical image on an ages-old stone tablet. Roman welcomes them into the village.
Roman is assassinated by a man who was exiled for rape, and returns to avenge his exile.
His compadre from the war, Podo’be, twice defends the village from the invading Chinese Army. Using unconventional Indian skills such as blowing up a beaver dam, combining skills learned in The Special Forces, Podobe’s efforts initially succeed, but inevitably fail as they are overwhelmed by continuous assaults. Amidst a second assault, Sipayek is abandoned. Swimming through an underground tunnel, their escape reveals isolated marine life that confound their journey. After an unknown time in a in canoes and with failing lanterns, they eventually arrive at The Crazy Horse Memorial, where survivors have gathered for a gathering of nations, in the Black Hills. Podo’be's exploits are mythical and Promise shows leadership abilities far beyond his age.

The resulting mingling of chemicals from a combination of decades of pollutants and radiation cultivates mutated and deadly microscopic life form with a voracious appetite for biological materials such as domestic animals and humans, further confounding the survival of humankind. Fire destroys them, but they are found throughout the world. The logistics prove challenging indeed, a scorched earth policy referred to as Operation Dog Days, the exclusive solution for Earth to be purified, and begin anew. The Chinese to conquer against the greatly diminished United States, but soon begin to fall victim to the rampant organisms, including H2N3, once known as avian flu, once determined exclusively within chickens.
In an epic battle unlike any other in history, The Seven Fires Prophesy unfolds.

And for a free book, at this length, I can't complain TOO much.

I read fast, and I read a lot. So I tend to look for free books. Otherwise my reading habit will run me out of house and home. As such, I tend to come across some really bad books, but the occasional undiscovered gem as well.

This was a good story overall. It could really stand to be tightened up, an unbiased third party with a hard copy and a ruthless red pen could make this really sing. Possibly 2 red pens, because they might run one out just adding commas. That was the strangest thing I thought about this book, where the hell are all the commas? There are a few, but not nearly as many as would be necessary for proper sentence structure. Many sentences had to be read more than once or twice to figure out who was talking to whom about what, because there were no commas. That seriously detracted from the story for me, having to continuously rewind and lose my immersion. Commas, people! They're free, and you won't run out of them, I promise!

Remember:
"We're going to eat, Grandma!" is different than "We're going to eat Grandma!"

There are some points that tend to drag endlessly on for no real reason. I'm reminded a bit of Steven King books, the unabridged ones, where he spends half of your reading day talking about some character's irrelevant memory about something that isn't even really pertinent to character or plot. While still good, you may find yourself skimming once in awhile. That's where that red pen is going to come in handy. Even Steven King has to kill his darlings for the larger public audience, and that's what is also needed here.

If this book had about 75-100 pages knocked off of it, it would be just about the perfect length, and be largely free of fluff/filler.

But yeah, pretty good story. A little more fantastical than I usually like my TEOTWAWKI fiction, but that's not something I can really fault anything for.

Interesting look at a wish of many people's. Not for the fall of our great society but for the hope of man. We as a people
Need to learn to live together in peace.
When Brian Goodson approached me two years ago with the request to edit his book, Seven Fires, I was reluctant at first because the book had been published twice before. And, upon opening the version he sent me, the book was filled with errors of punctuation and bad descriptions related to conversation. The story was also a bit confusing, at first.

But Brian was persistent, and, although I stopped editing more than once because I had other obligations, I finally finished the editing after nine months. Goodson wanted to publish it again but did not have the funds and fell sick without notifying me. In August, I learned that he died. So, I published this book for him with the proceeds from sales to go to his wife.

Seven Fires opens with a terrible, unfortunate nuclear war between the United States and China caused by missed communication. But Indian prophecy had given the Indian Nations of North America an edge over the people in the cities because they prepared and went underground. Unfortunately, the result of such a destructive nuclear war not only destroyed many population centers, it created a nuclear winter in the northern hemisphere bringing what life that survived the explosions to be buried under tons of snow and ice for months.

Jeff Meserve, an Indian schoolteacher, goes to the grocery store and accidentally lets a crow come into the store with him as a strange snowstorm descends, trapping him and several others of widely different backgrounds in the store. When they finally dig themselves out, everyone is dead except for Jeff and his, now pregnant, librarian friend, Abigail. Both weathered the ordeal that the others didn't. But the crow flew free and guides them to Sipayek, the Indian village of Roman Eaglewalk.

Roman led his village underground into a massive cave system with a fast flowing river providing freshwater and power for electricity. The village emerges from the cave intact, but Roman is troubled. He goes on a spirit walk and discovers a stone tablet of unknown age that seems to foretell the future. In the meantime, a son is born to Jeff and Abigail on their journey and Roman comes to their rescue from a bear. The son is given the name, Promise.

The troubled President of the United States, Franklin Deleanor Lenning, emerging from his shelter and finding the country in ruins, learns of the village's success and goes there to seek advice on how to deal with the invading Chinese. Years before, Lenning and Eaglewalk were in combat together.

Promise turns out to be extraordinarily gifted in Indian ways. He befriends a girl in the village who is older, named Purity. Together, they amaze their parents and seem to be connected to the mysterious stone tablet. Roman prepares the village for war with the Chinese and learns from his wife that Jeff is his son, making Promise his grandson. At this point, Roman's father appears and kills him. The crow, ever present, oversees all. The Chinese assault the village several times but are driven back.

President Lenning arrives with military reinforcement, but they are not needed. The Chinese finally overrun the village and all are forced into the cave and into the underground river. The villagers spend an indeterminate amount of time navigating the treacherous river in birchbark canoes until they finally emerge in the Black Hills where all of the Indian nations of North America have gathered to fight the invaders.

The radiation fallout from all the nuclear bombs has created many mutations, particularly among diseases, that are running rampant among the survivors and the Chinese invaders. The United States Army has also provided just enough fuel and supplies for the Chinese Army to drive deep into the central plains without enough resources to return to their ships in the Gulf of Mexico.

Using unconventional means, the Indians and a few from the United States Army defeat the Chinese and a new era begins. But all of the seven continents, according to Indian legend, must be burned to purify them of the scourge of the mutated diseases. Promise and Abigail set out on a mission to reunite the people of the world. The crow flies with them.

For those that like science fiction based on fact, mixed with Indian legend and folklore, with great adventures and dramas carried out with a bit of mysticism thrown in, Seven Fires is a book you will enjoy. After all my hard work to make it more readable, I highly recommend the story to you, the reader.

Ronald W. Hull is author of The Kaleidoscope Effect and seven other books.
Great book again with its very possible catasdtrophy and end result. This says much more than the idiot Gore has to say and predicts a future of disaster perfectly both nuclear a bacterial.
